Broadway Duchess 2025 Solo

This show was made over the last two years while I was thinking of the digital hybridisation of image culture. The show is a display of the dichotomy of proliferated images that are found on the online visual media space. The physical grounding of these images are an attempt to recreate the online sphere of images in a material environment. As we adapt to contemporary living practices, with the complexities of online versus in-person engagement, the presentation of contemporary and historical subject matter has become hybridised and homogenised, in the context of the 21st Century. Cameras present snapshots of luxury as well as mundane mediocrity, which all amalgamates on phones and laptops. This technology is the new Mecca and spiritual centre for beauty, and where to see the prevailing style of a particular time instead of through a particular physical environment.

The show explores the idea of the current online media zeitgeist, and its potential for homogenous interconnection between banal subjects and visual experimentation. The hybridisation of contemporary media develops a dissolve of information in creating new objects and Images. The paintings are images pertaining to academic and referential media including text book images, wikipedia images, online chat room screenshots etc, and the editing of these images alludes to disrupted visual connection between the physical and the online. It's important to represent our current online cultural practices to inform us of how this culture of proliferation affects our present social capabilities and engagement with our surroundings.

Broadway Duchess in itself is a weird polarity between two things that do not relate - the name comes from a Steely Dan song that’s about receiving information (I got the news). The subjects of the show are not not completely unrelated, containing content of spirituality, decadence and thresholds, that are windows into hybridised experience though the framework of contemporary painting. The painting is of varying qualities of realism in a figurative framework to mirror varying qualities of images in online search engines. I wanted to create a Pinterest board of images in a physical environment, and I wanted to paint things that were found as prints on internet cafe walls from the early 2000s - I thought by marrying these, I could create a narrative around the beauty of a mundane aesthetic and its place in contemporary image making.
